Reflection
School safety is of utmost importance so this will always be a growth area as I continue to learn more about safety best practices. I had some understanding of school safety from my thirteen years working in education. I grew based on my discussions with Mr. Akre and Mrs. Stefan as well as Dean of Students Mr. Schimek and School Resource Officer Mr. Hutchins. I also had the opportunity to take part in a drug search allowing me to interact with local law enforcement. Part of the architectural design for the Deer River High School remodel project has focused on passive security measures to increase security. This has helped me better understand the role well-designed facilities can play in security. I also had the opportunity to learn more about Social Emotional Learning and how this can impact school safety when all students feel connected to the school.
